  • The Capitol Reef Classic was a licensed cycling points event, comprising three stages or races. Many incredible athletes from all over the country came to this high desert region in order to test themselves. This event encompassed two days of intense competition. We found that the travel time, the two days of competition and all that goes with it, were prohibitive to the masses. All that participated were thrilled with the courses, and setting. To better suit an exploding cycling community we have transformed this event from a licensed race to a Gran Fondo. We hope that in the future the 'Stage Race' will resume.

In response to cyclists of all abilities, the organizers have designed an event that will accommodate both recreational cyclists, as well as those with a competitive edge. Gran Fondo is Italian for 'BIG RIDE', and has been a great European tradition for many years. It is only recently that this tradition has taken hold in the US. Gran Fondos are long distance mass participation cycling events.

Poison Spider Cycles of Moab were the first to organize such an event here in Utah. Riding or racing against the clock up over the La Sal mountains in the south-east corner of the state.

All abilities are welcome! Some cyclists enter for the challenge and satisfaction of making it to the finish line, others want to push themselves and their friends; and a few ride to win. All entrants will be timed.

The Capitol Reef Classic takes place in an area of one of Utah's best kept secrets. From 7000 feet at the valley floor the mountains rise to well over 11,000 feet. The summer temperatures are on average 10-15 degrees cooler than the Wasatch Front. And the scenery is amazing. Wayne County, Utah is quite a tourist destination, with an incredible variety of hotels and restaurants. Loa and Torrey, are just a couple of the quaint communities creating the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park, and the famous Hwy 12 Scenic Byway!
